[English] OS-9 L1 v1.2

Mensajepor jltursan » 22 Jul 2017 11:26

Following a suggestion from malikto999 I've been able to dump some disks from my collection:

Imagen
OMG!, what a mess!

I'm using Expert-FM and my FM-77AV to transfer disks to 3.5" and then dump them with DITT. This way I've created a OS-9 D88 image, you can download it below -thumbup :

I haven't had luck dumping FLEX or CP/M disks, also none of them work with my FM-77AV so it's difficult to know for sure if it's a dumping problem or a 5.25->3.5 transfer problem. I've tested the main copy methods of Expert (Volume Copy, Interleave Copy and Backup Copy) without changes :-(

It's a shame as FLEX for FM-7 is a very old version (3.01) that I've never seen commented anywhere.

Just tested OS9L1 ...
Now we *only* need to find some apllications supported by this OS version, for instance:
- Basic09, C compiler, Dynacalc, OS9 Assembler Debugger, Pascal compiler, R.M.S, Stylograph, I am afraid these would
have to be 'adapted' versions to make use of the Subsystem ...
These are a few I remember I used back in the 80's on the Dragon64
Not to speak about the Sierra games collections that used to work on the CoCo3 ...

I think that it must be impossible, I've never seen preserved these programs, they must be tho...

Anyway, doesn't OS-9 works like the CP/M?, I mean, OS-9 BIOS doesn't works as a compatibility layer making programs compatible with the host platform?

The others are driving me crazy, I haven't succedeed in dumping them. I have some ideas to test yet...

I have never tested my Dragon floppies (5,25") on the CoCo3 disk drive.
I had not even thought about testing them on the emulators (XRoar / VCC)
If memory serves, I think that the disks from one computer didn't work on the other, because there were some files to be changed ...
say some device descriptors (screen, serial port, centronics and keyboard to say the least)
The memory management is absolutely different with the GIME and its MMU on the CoCo3 to allow access to 128k/512k
compared to *nothing* on the Dragon64 to work with just 64k.
Besides, What format is required on the FM-7 as an OS9 disk? The standard one we used on the Dragon?
Maybe we could test some 'virtual' files from the Dragon o the FM-7 ...

pere

Unfortunately I am finding that the disks from the Dragon64 and the ones from the CoCo have a different format compared to the .D88
so I am always getting this message: ERROR #246

Sure, physical media (or logic formats) are way different. It's like in CP/M, if you can inject a CP/M binary into a CP/M disk image for a machine, it will work for sure.

Without processing, FM OS-9 disk image they're not going to work, you'll need to extract files from them and look for a way to add them to a working OS-9 disk image. So, using malikto999's D77manager, you can do this task and create whatever disk images you want :-)
If we try with simple CoCo's binaries, we can test if they work or not under FM-7 OS-9.

Hi,
I have extracted from a CoCo disk virtual file, the binary files named BASIC09 and RUNB
Then I have added them to the FM-7 .d88 file named OS9L1V2 and have started the emulation ...
Apparently it works well in text mode ...
best regards

Did you succeed in dumping a 5 inch FD!
I see. Did you use EXPERT FM? A good idea!

Both FLEX and CP/M can be executed on the XM7 emulator.
If you dump them, how about trying it.

To execute FLEX on XM7, you need to check the setting "フロッピーアクセス時にウェイトを挿入する - Insert a wait at floppy access (W)" in Settings - General.
It is necessary to specify the model as FM-7 and boot in DOS mode.
But is FLEX version 3.01? My own FLEX for FM-8 is 3.11, so is there a version older than that?

You can execute CP/M on the XM7ZIP (a derivative version of XM7) corresponding to Z80.
http://retropc.net/apollo/download/xm7/xm73zip/dl.htm
However, unfortunately, development has been completed quite a long time ago.

By the way, D77Manager can import CoCo OS-9 and FLEX disk image file.
(For now only the files with the extension .dsk and .os9 are supported.)

When you select the menu of 'import disk' and the file dialog is displayed, you can select the CoCo image by changing the file type to CoCo disks.
I import Microware C from CoCo's OS-9 disk and INTROL C from FLEX disk and use it.
(Game using graphics depends on model, so it does not work.)

Already tested, they don't work; but I'm gonna try your suggestions, thanks!

But is FLEX version 3.01? My own FLEX for FM-8 is 3.11, so is there a version older than that?

Yes!, it's a very old version, 3.01 ...or at least it prints that version at boot. Do you have modern versions of Flex or OS-9 already dumped?

You can execute CP/M on the XM7ZIP (a derivative version of XM7) corresponding to Z80.

Stupid me!, so standard XM7 doesn't have Z80 emulation and that's the reason the images don't work.

Lot of things there, Vector's repository looks interesting but sadly, seems that most of the software only works in X68000 platform.

CoCo's software repositories will be the best source of OS-9 programs, if they're only text-based ones I'm sure that most of them will work (and don't use specific features of the machine like memory management). Compilers may work fine and they're some of them :-)

If the thread is marked as English, you all should write in that language to aid Malik to better understand the commentaries.
